A Serious Question

My oldest, who is a junior in high school this year, wants to spend a few weeks next summer in Australia and New Zealand, with perhaps a little Fiji or other South Pacific island thrown in. (While Australia is his first choice, he also has some interest in Costa Rica as a back-up plan.) Needless to say, I'm not invited. In fact nobody from our family is invited. He'd be going on his own, or more precisely, in some sort of organized peer group with adults in charge.

We're looking for something with an educational or cultural or service component; something fun, but more than just a few weeks of sitting on a beach. although a little of that would be okay. I've looked at Travel for Teens and West Coast Connection. Do any Friends of Befouled have suggestions for a program or school that does a nice job with this sort of thing?

The Saying Yes Travel Company would be happy to accompany your son on his trip...

Seriously though, I left a note over at Riddled.

maybe he could hang out with Smut Clyde for a few weeks. I bet it wouldn't be just sitting around on a beach, although he might develop a disturbing fondness for alarming woodcuts. Or an alarming fondness for disturbing woodcuts.

Jennifer sent up the Snag Signal.

Big sister is in education, so I'll forward your question in her direction.

Snag,

I live in Wellington, NZ. Happy to help in any way that I can. Pinko has my details or I can send you an e-mail.

Cheers!

If you're looking to adopt a 39-year old who loves to travel, e-mail me.

I don't think I would pass the Snag catch/throw a baseball tryout OR the drinking requirement. I cede the field to Brando for Befouled desperation sitcom cousin adoption gambit for ratings, but I would love to do it based on sausage alone.

What I love best is this comment is like a 7-11 for filthbot. Convenient!

I suspect we're not helping snag much though.

Oh no, please, go ahead, this is all very interesting.

I might. I need someone to shovel snow this winter.

Sorry Snag, I do not have a clue about this sort of thing. I would suggest getting in touch with a school of a similar age group in NZ to see if they can come up with anything.

Fine, I'll send the kid to Wisconsin with a backpack full of bourbon. I'm sure he can learn all kinds of interesting things from Zombie and Brando.

I think we're going to call Mr. Plow this year, at least for the weekdays. I estimate I spent 50 hours snowblowing last winter. F that.

Your soon realizes it will be winter here correct?

I don't know if what we have in NZ really counts as "winter" by northern-hemisphere terms. In Wellington, the main difference is that the rain gets colder.

I have suggestions for Israel, but not the area he is interested in. Sorry!

Hi Gregor! Nice to see you.
