Kind of defeats the whole purpose.

Well if they are going to be flexible on the definition of "adult", there should also be some flexibility in the definition of "sober".
Perhaps if you just acted serious, that would be good enough.
My Lovely Bride once hit a deer she claims fell from the sky onto the vehicle she had stopped at the busiest intersection in our city. I do not think that is a helpful alternative.
